Training Tips For A Puppy

By: Bob Bailey

When you get a puppy from a breeder, at six weeks old, it should have had one (1) five way shot and been wormed at least 3 or 4 times. You should keep it confined from other animals until it gets its second seven (7) way shot. It is after the second round of shots that the puppy actually builds the immune system against the diseases. At this time, you can put a collar and leash on the puppy and begin training to lead and heel. Once the puppy gets comfortable with the collar and leash training, you can start playing with a bird's wing to begin teaching him to point. Each time he points, you should repeat the word "whoa". You should keep the training sessions to twice a day for no more than 5-10 minutes, until the pup becomes familiar with the wing and then move on to a higher level of training.
